AN INTRO

ENBE - P.1 > NATURE

Nature - stripped down to just colour and texture

OUR FIRST SITE VISIT EVER. On the 28th of March till the 2nd of March, all 105 of us made our first class trip to a training resort in Jandabaik, Pahang. This short weekend 'vacation' is a compulsory requirement of our first project, under the 'nature' element of our module. What better way to break the ice than a merry camp to a nature resort all together? During this trip, we are meant to feel nature and document the process, in our own creative way. Basically, our first project encompasses the following:

1) The site visit.
2)  Making a documentary video.
3)  Creating a scrapbook journal about our trip experience.
4) Making an infographic exhibition booth.

The start of a long and deadly serious project awaited us with the beginning of this trip. A copy of the brief is attached below.

We are required to work on this project in a group of 6. The very tutorial, our tutor, Ms Delliya already had us separated into groups within our own tutorial group. Out of random, my group consisted of Nicky, Sabrina, Samantha, Darren, Hariish and I. We were all pretty clueless to begin with but slowly got better at it. For the series of meetings before the trip, we had a few discussions and brainstormers to identify things that needed to be done during the trip, such as proper recording and documentation. In terms of job delegation, Darren was in charge of all things photos and video, whereas Hariish, Nicky, Samantha and Sabrina alternated between collecting samples, sketching and taking down notes and ideas, while I managed the team.

Besides this, we also confirmed the theme for our whole project. A theme was crucial to determine the direction and style of our booth, video and everything in between. In just one discussion, our group theme was set as 'Dynamism', giving the meaning of constant movement and progress, which exactly depicts nature.

The only constant thing in the world is change - a quote
The site visit was actually a really important part of the whole project progress, it was the starting point of all ideas that could contribute to one awesome idea for a theme. Here are some photos of our site and us doing what we do :)

Over the span of these 3 days, we explored and collected information, sketched, walked around, filmed our video, and took in all  the goodness our site offered, stripping it down to the last detail. Here are a few elements that make up our site:

Clear river water
Thick shade of leaves

Vines and trees surviving side by side
The presence of these elements became the foundation of content for our booth later. But not forgetting the rest of trip. Jam-packed with activities and games at every hour, there was little free time for anything else, which definitely created a warmer bond between everyone. Enjoy the photos of FNBE performing, canoeing, and just being ourselves!

After we got back to campus, the mood became more subtle and reverted back to the its original pace of getting work done. It was obvious that every team was working hard on their models, content and video, from the studio hustle and bustle that got more intense towards the final week before presentation. With what we had, we designed and tailored the model, content and mood of our booth according to the theme of Dynamism. We separated ourselves to different tasks: Hariish and I worked on the infographic content and design, while Sam helped with making and building the booth. Nicky and Sabrina did the 3D model representation, and Darren edited the video. Below are some photos of our process of putting the whole thing together:
(In order: The colour theme for the infographics and exhibition booth > Drawing the diagrams for the infographics > The mini model of the booth's layout > Quality control of the model boards > Making the 3D site representation > Making the actual model)

After roughly one and the half months of weekly discussions, tutorials and progress, the exhibition day dawned upon us! We made certain that the colour, shape and content of our booth reflected dynamism from every angle, for example, how the booth is made for viewers to walk around it, the dynamic shape of the booth, the colour transition from blue to purple to red, and the interactive content as well. Here are the photos of our completed exhibition booth.

The layout and content of our booth deserves some explanation too. We separated the content of our infographics into 2 categories, information on the plants found and the insects found. Using our own 'color-coded system', we used coloured dots to zoom in on the front and side sketches of the site to the related information. Some of these info were also interactive, made in a way for the viewers to play with. A lot of the information were also pop-ups, to appear more visually appealing. Also, we created a 3D site representation for viewers to literally touch and feel. Around the booth, we provided additional photos of our site.

Our group's documentary video filmed on site and also back at campus, describing our experience and lessons learnt there. Edited using a broadcasting news style, it is a informative yet unique video. Filmed and edited by Darren.

With all the excitement, not to forget our individual scrapbook journal. Through this hand-crafted assignment, we were supposed to document and elaborate on our experience during the trip, our site exploration, and our personal thoughts and reflections. I decided on a personal, homely, and artistic concept and approach to my scrapbook, as its basically the true meaning of one. I used materials such as recycled paper and black felt tip pens, booth the tools I work best with. Here are the photos of the pages of my scrapbook.

In conclusion, ENBE Project 1 was truthfully the most challenging project. We learnt a lot of lessons, mainly how to prioritise tasks and time management, not to forget workmanship and choice of materials. Besides that, we also learnt the skills of conceptualising and communicating with each other and the lecturer during tutorial sessions. It was a awesome experience to get to feel closer to nature and the people around me at the same time, resulting in transferring information, thoughts and ideas properly. We have a lot to learn, but our group made a good impression and touchdown for the project. As for the scrapbook, I feel like I need to improve on my information arrangement and choice of graphics.

Made good memories and experiences though! Looking forward to the next challenge.
