AN INTRO

CTS - FINAL P. > BOARD GAME

Egyptian culture drawing
The theme of the second CTS project didn't disappoint: to create an board game design. Definitely a most mind-challenging assignment! To start off, everyone was assessed individually by their lecturers through a individual board game proposal in the form of a handwritten report. Next, we formed groups of 7 people and in the end, only one of our reports gets chosen by the lecturer to be produced. Following that, we had to understand the selected game thoroughly and include improvements and alterations, besides figuring out its packaging and actual design. Lastly, a ad video was also required.

My boardgame: Menu Mix. Lots of research was needed to make this game possible to even create. I tried to take the unconventional path, theming it on food instead of strategies like most people. I had a good time designing my proposal in a graphically-visual way as well. It turned out okay, though I should have spared more time for the drawing and documenting. Here is my report.

My group for this round of projects fit very well into its dynamic theme. Consisting of Nurin, Aida, Min Junn, Jefri, En Huey, Lee Yih and Dayana, all of us had our own strengths to contribute to the project. After the individual assessment where everyone submitted their board game proposals, our project lecturer, Ms Ida then selected a single person’s proposal that was to be made: Lee Yih. Her game was names Treasure Hunter, where in short, players had to hunt for treasure and find the quickest escape route.

Because the second round of projects was crammed in only a few weeks, we didn’t show much progress during tutorials. But the final few days before the submission, we absolutely put our whole heart and hands into it. One very obvious point in our progress was that everyone had different ideas and opinions that was a challenge to incorporate into the game. In the end though, we settled on a clear path for the game after countless discussions. Jefri and I worked on the game structure and planning, MJ on the pyramid structure (yes! Wait for it in the photos below), Dayana on any graphic design, the others on the construction of the other items such as tokens and cards. Towards the end, Nurin, Aida and I did the game manual while Lee Yih and En Huey, the video storyboard.

Below is a copy of our game manual.

Here are some photos of our progress (plus group selfies!).

Our ‘Treasure Hunter’ ad video. Enjoy!

On presentation day, our CTS lecturers had arranged for our videos to be screened in a fancy lecture theatre for everyone’s enjoyment, so that was pretty nice. After, we had a small exhibition outside where passer-bys stopped to stare and play our board games. At the final briefing, the lecturers congratulated us for our effort and passion, and said their final goodbyes for the sem.

Exhibition day!

This time round, it made me really happy to see every other friend working their fingers to bone to make this a success. It proved that time wasn’t a constraint to us who truly wanted to see the game come to life. Saying goodbye to CTS was a bittersweet event J I truly enjoyed the memories.
