| The Modernity of Tradition - somehow depicts the topic of my essay? |
For our first English assignment of the semester, the FNBE students are required to compose an short essay based on one of the topics stated in the brief. Following the handing-out of the brief, our English lecturer, Ms Thivilojana gave us a thorough explanation on the requirements and details of this individual assignment. Below is a copy of the assignment brief.
As my first English essay assignment for university, I did not expect it to be, for the most part, so similar to high school essays. In terms of structure and writing format, both were the same, which made it simpler for me to adjust to, and I'm sure for all of my course mates as well.
The main difference was the amount of analysis, research and idea development that had to be done before even composing the pre-writing or draft of the essay. No matter the essay topic that had to be chosen by each student, a great deal of self-study and on-line research was compulsory in order to utilize the correct main points for proper content development while writing the essay. Not only that, the need for pre-writing that had to be submitted along with the essay was also new to us, as many of us did not bother drafting out essay content prior to actually writing it. However, through this new syllabus, we realised pre-writing definitely aided us to structure our thoughts and flow more thoroughly and effectively. Lastly, we were completely foreign to referencing formats, or its purpose. Soon, we learnt the proper techniques for APA (American Psychological Association) referencing for our essays through a two-hour course arranged by our lecturer.
I selected the topic 'Traditional Houses - Comparison and Contrast' because I was excited at the prospect of researching on an architecture-related topic. I also admire and appreciate the diverse culture and heritage of all things traditional, besides having a liking for analysing and comparing subjects. Below is a copy of my essay, titled 'The Differences between a Rumah Melayu and a Traditional Hapanese House'.

To sum it up, this first assignment required a fair bit of extensive research and tutorials to ensure proper guidance from my lecturer, but no doubt, I learnt a fair bit about proper essay writing in the end.
