AN INTRO

DESIGN - P.1B > DAILY ITEMS

Sound waves. Don't they physically resemble lines and thread?

The second part of Project 1 was a evolution from the first one, bringing us a step further, a step more complex. Now, working in a group of four and with playing with actual materials, our focus was still the same: to 'objectify' design elements and principles. Producing 9 artworks and 2 A2 presentation boards to be exhibited for the first time this Semester was nerve-wrecking. To add to that, each group's item was selected at random. Our group was positive at our outcome: thread.

We were a dedicated bunch, no doubt. I had joined an all-girl group of Carol, Juyi and Kayla. We would soon grow to become very close, with all our like-mindedness and work ethics. We started the project off by searching for a suitable concept that represented our material as well as future design ideas. From the initial idea of music, we progressed to the design of sound: sound waves. The initial idea suggested by our tutor, Ms Delliya, we knew we had hit the right concept.

Sound waves was an excellent topic of discussion as it is related to both thread and lines (as our basic design element and technique) from a design perspective. With that, we worked forward and never stopped. Sifting through endless possibilities of designs, we started off with practising basic sewing techniques on our chosen base: canvas. What started out with YouTube tutorials turned into full-fledged sewing sessions as the girls completed one artwork after another, with full detail and determination. In a couple of weeks, the progress was amazingly stunning.

My only task was to work on the boards and content, besides coming up with designs and developing the concepts and explanation behind all artworks. I researched as widely as I could, compiled and filtered information and made endless drafts. Seeing our tutor weekly also helped. Nearing the submission, we drafted the real boards on mounting wood. We even chained the canvases together like a real artwork assemblage. Photos of the process:

On exhibition day, we were so proud to see people admiring the fine details and smiling at the presentation boards. It was worth every last bit of effort. Amazingly satisfying to see everything put up together. I learned that the right concept can lead a project, structuring every detail and connection until all holes are sealed. With constant development, we really saw the idea grow into artworks and solid reason.

I feel honoured to be able to succeed this project with the help of my lovely group mates, and to be able to experience and understand the process of connection between concept and design. It was like a open window to me: I could suddenly envision future possibilities and paths because I had understood how design works.

To the Spectrasonic girls!
