DESIGN - P.2A > TRANSFORMING 2D INTO 3D

Crash - our word

The next brief meant the start of the second project - exploring 3D models, evolving from the previous 2D artworks. Given a word, each group were required to create 9 mock up models categorised by three stages, word transformation, colour and materials, each complete with its own mini presentation board. At the end of our progressive tutorials, a final, most perfect representation of the given word must be produced, with 2 larger presentation board. With the previous group, we were already looking forward to a new challenge to replicate similar success. 3D meant a whole different game plan. Brief below:

Given a choice, we picked the word' 'crash' amongst others such as 'tangled', 'merge', 'provoke' with a dramatic design in mind. Even tutorial structures had evolved to become more efficient and focused to ensure weekly progress from each group with longer hours and model-making in class. With written expectations on what to produce every week, we started working hard right from the beginning through each stage of word transformation to colour to materials and finally the last model. In all truth, we always found ourselves stuck and frustrated with design developments and techniques, but with patience and extensive research and tutorials, we managed to always pick ourselves off the ground to make it better.

It was a satisfying feeling to see a beautiful and expressive mock-up finished. While the 3 girls mainly handled the making of the mock-ups and eventually the final model, I took charge of all presentation boards again. Research on design theories, elements and principles had to be carried out faster and more extensive this time as there were several boards to design. Referring to each other during model-making for idea development was a normal occurrence. We had good times laughing together while stressing out making models and brain storming for the boards. Here are some photos of us at work:

Another 'research' face

Working towards the final model became increasingly stressful, of course. But we managed to agree on the material of our choice - mirror. And concrete as our base as well, as both portray impossibly hard elements that crack and crash with much effect. When there is a will there is way: we managed to learn how to cut mirror and make concrete through this eventful model.

Special feature - shimmery reflections of mirror reflect 'crash' in its true form

Material, arrangement and shape all thought-out to create a 'crash' image
Our arrangement and group photo of the models on exhibition day. Coming up with prop-up stands was an impromptu but smart idea!

Then with smaller boards to the final ones:

Our feedback on the spot from the lecturers was expected, to me anyway, We could have done more initial idea development, as our base understanding of the word was not deep enough - our progress from the first to final model was not strong enough. In summary, we had to improve our exploration and understanding of each stage. We learned from this experience - a group photo.

My girls

Bringing me a step further from the last, I am grateful for the learning process.
